New to InterVarsity? Got Questions?
Q: When and where does Intervarsity meet?
A: Every week, we gather for Large Group at The Loft, located at 605 E. Green in Champaign, above Jimmy John's. Many of us meet in our respective residence hall lobbies to walk over to Large Group together. Talk to your Area Coordinator or someone in your Small Group for details. See you there!
Other events, like prayer meetings and retreats, are announced at Large Group and on the calendar. Ask your Area Coordinator for more information. Finally, one or more Small Group Bible studies meet in every hall and some apartments weekly.
Q: Do I have to be a Christian or a specific denomination to join?
A: No, on both counts. You are welcomed in our community, no matter what your background—or non-background—in Christianity is. We think that everyone should have a chance to make an informed decision about Jesus. IV is a great place to ask hard questions, find out what Jesus is all about and learn how to follow Him.
Q: How do I find out more?
A: An easy first step is to explore our Web site, which includes our basis of faith and what makes us different from other organizations on campus. You can also email your Area Coordinator with questions. Of course, we'd much rather talk to you! Stop by any of our booths around campus (especially Quad Day!), talk to someone at a Small Group or Large Group, or give us a call at 217-367-5198.
Q: Where did you get that name? Are you a sports club?
A: We aren't a sports club or group only for Christian athletes. The name InterVarsity goes back to our roots in England. Student led Christian Unions at Cambridge and Oxford (established in the 1870s) met together for the Inter-Varsity ("between universities") Christian Conference (December 1919). Students from these movements sent an alumnus as a missionary to Canada in 1928. In 1938, U of Michigan started the first US InterVarsity chapter. The chapter at University of Illinois was started in the early 40s as Illini Christian Fellowship.
Q: Is InterVarsity International?
A: Yes and No.
YES: InterVarsity/USA is the founding member of the International Fellowship of Evangelical Students, a partnership of self-governing sister movements. The goal of IFES is to start indigenous, self-governing movements in every country with a university. IVCF/USA supports these efforts through student financial giving and by sending staff as temporary help to get younger movements going, under their direction and by their invitation. IFES now works in about 150 out of 160 countries, with over 300,000 students.
NO: IVCF/USA is intentionally not an international organization. We want to avoid the cultural imperialism, real and perceived, that would result from an American-directed international organization.
